Detecting deception in children

This course is aimed at all role-players required to determine the truthfulness of a witness’s evidence, specifically a child witness. The purpose of this course to provide role-players with the specialized skills and knowledge needed to effectively and scientifically evaluate a witness’s statement and evidence. The participants are presented with the latest research on evaluating evidence and credibility.

Target audience

This course is relevant to prosecutors, police, social workers and presiding officers.

Course content

This course includes the following topics:

  • The ability of children to distinguish between fact and fantasy
  • Identifying lying
  • The perception of children as witnesses
  • A developmental model for evaluating the evidence of children
  • Nurcombe’s Model
  • Statement validity analysis

Logistics

This course is presented over a 3 day period, and participants receive a folder and a manual.
